Saint Francis of Assisi school was opened in 1929. We presently occupy three buildings, with the Pre-School classes held in the building adjacent to Conway Hall. The stone school building contains classrooms for Kindergarten, Grades 1-3, main  office, computer lab, nurse's office, Delaware County Intermediate Unit  remediation and counseling room. The brick building presently contains classrooms for Grades 4-8, principal's office, faculty room, Honors math classroom and contains a combination auditorium/gymnasium. St. Francis of Assisi School has been accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools since 1984.

COUNTDOWN TO OUR KINDERGARTEN CLOSING CEREMONY

Dear Parents,

        It’s hard to believe that the end of the school year is quickly approaching.  In preparation for our big day, I am giving you all the information you need in one letter.  Thank you for sharing your children with me this year.  I will definitely miss them all!!

Last Week of School

Monday-Wednesday, June 3-5: Normal school days

Tuesday, June 4: K-1 Picnic (there will probably be more information circulating shortly regarding t-shirt orders, volunteers, etc…)

Thursday, June 6:  Our Last Day of School with an 11:30am Dismissal!!

                            Closing Ceremony at 6:30pm in Church

Closing Ceremony Lines

Please continue to have your child practice their lines!! Thank you!!

Closing Ceremony Dress Code

Boys – wear summer uniform: navy shorts, yellow polo shirt, dark socks and dress shoes

Girls – wear winter uniform: jumper, blouse, navy knee socks and shoes

Call Time

Children should meet in the back of church no later than 6:15pm on Thursday, June 6th.  Our ceremony begins promptly at 6:30pm.  All are welcome to attend.

After Ceremony Celebration

There will be a small celebration in the gym following our closing ceremony. All are welcome to attend.  Please be on the lookout for a sign-up genius to help with this special day.  Thank you in advance for all you do!!

End of the Year Project

Decorate a shoe box (or one of similar size) that has a lid.  Have your child choose 3-5 objects or pictures (no more please) to put inside the box.  These objects/pictures should be ones that best describes them.  Some examples include: a souvenir from a family vacation, a special toy, a favorite book, a trophy, etc… We will be sharing our boxes with our friends during the last few days of school, and they will also be on display at our closing ceremony. DUE BY JUNE 3!!

KINDERGARTEN APRIL NEWS

HAPPY SPRING!!  I can hardly believe we only have a few months of school left.  Here's what's happening this month in Kindergarten:

*It's amazing to see how far the children have come since September!!  They are really becoming great little readers and writers.  We continue to have a letter of the week, new snappy words and new sight words to learn.  The children are learning how to sound out words as they write in their journals.  We are reading in school everyday and I hope the children continue to read at home as well.

*In Math we will learn about money with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

*In Religion we will talk about "new life".  We will discuss Jesus' resurrection and how we can see signs of new life all around us during this special time of year.  We will complete the unit in our books about ways that Jesus wants us to share God's love.

*The month of April will be filled with activities about Spring and all the wonderful things God created for us!!

HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING IN KINDERGARTEN THIS MONTH:

READING- We continue Unit 4 in our Reading Series.  Students will continue with a new letter, snappy words, and sight words every week.  We will continue with our short vowel sounds and begin blending sounds together.  It is important to continue to practice all snappy and sight words on a daily basis.  We will also learn beginning blends. The children are doing very well with reading!!

MATH- We will finish our chapter on addition readiness and move the the chapter on subtraction readiness.  We will work on continuing to identify numbers past 10.

RELIGION- We will begin the month learning about Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and then move into talking about Lent and our Lenten Journey which is our Acts of Kindness Project.    I look forward to hearing all about the kind things my students are doing.  We will also talk about Jesus and how much he loves us.    We will also talk about new life just in time for spring!!

I have many St. Patrick's and Spring Activities planned for this month.

Here's What's Happening in Kindergarten this month:

Reading:  We will continue and finish with Unit 3 in our Reading Series.  We have  been working very hard on our consonant and short vowel sounds.  We are sounding out short vowel 3 letter words and reading our decodable books.  Please continue to practice all SNAPPY WORDS at home!!  We use these words a lot throughout our day.  We have started writing in our journal where the children are beginning to "sound out words".

Math:  We will begin learning about different types of graphs.  We will continue to practice writing our numbers up to 31.

Religion:  The month of February brings us Valentine’s Day where we will talk about ways we can show others we love them. We will also talk about ways Jesus wants us to live.

2/8: 100th Day of School Celebration

2/14: Valentine Brunch and Exchange

2/15 and 2/18: No School

Reminders:

*Please continue to have your child practice zippering their own coat and practice tying their own shoes.

*Remember to practice ALL snappy words!!

*We will continue to go outside as long as the weather permits, so please make sure your child has the necessary outerwear!!

*Some students are running out of some supplies.  If your child is in need of anything, I will send a note home.

JANUARY NEWS

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Here's what's happening in Kindergarten for the month of January:

ILA: We will begin Unit 3 which contain stories about "Changes".  We will continue to have a letter of the week.  New sight words and snappy words will be introduced as well.  Target skills in this unit will include: compare and contrast, plot, cause and effect, drawing conclusions, and main idea.  During the month of January we will begin writing in our journals.  Students will start "kid writing" in which they will finish a sentence themselves.  This is a great way to practice "sounding out words".   We will continue to talk about nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

Math: We will continue with numbers to 31 and introduce tables and graphs.

Religion: We move on to Unit 3 in our Religion Books which is all about how Jesus Shows Us God's Love.  We will continue to pray the Sign of the Cross, Hail Mary, and The Our Father as well as our before meals prayer.

During the month of January we learn about Martin Luther King, Jr.  We will also do many themed winter activities as well as talk about why our catholic school is so special!!  It looks to be a fun-filled month!!

January 15: Sock Drive Begins

January 21: No School to honor Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 26: Opening of Catholic Schools Mass 4:00pm followed by a Potluck Dinner

January 30: Open House, Book Fair, Art Show, and Academic Fair 6:30-8:00 pm  **Stop in to see all the wonderful things our school is doing

 

A FEW REMINDERS/REQUESTS:

*Please remember library books on Tuesdays.

*Please continue to review ALL snappy and sights words each night.

*Some children are in need of new crayons and glue sticks.  Please check with your child if they need anything in school.

*Please encourage your child to zipper their own coats!!

NOVEMBER NEWS

Here's what is happening in Kindergarten during the month of November:

We are moving into Unit 2 in our Reading Series.  Unit 2 stories are all about animals and where they live.  We will continue with a Letter of the Week, new snappy words, and 5 new sight words each week.  Please continue to practice all snappy/sight words with your child every night!!  Assessments on sight words will continue to be on Friday.

In Math we will finish with Chapter 3: Positions and move on to Chapter 4: Numbers 0-10.

In Religion, we will continue to explore God's world and all the good things God made for us.  We will give thanks to God for all of these good things and for our families and friends.

The month of November will be spent doing many Thanksgiving activities.  We will have a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 20.  More details to follow!!

Please remember to check folders on a daily basis.  Anything stamped with a "sign and return" note, needs to be signed and returned to school the following day.  These papers will be found on the "R" side of your child's folder. 

Please remember to label your child's school sweater with their name!!! Thank You!!

**BOYS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO WEAR BELTS IN KINDERGARTEN UNTIL THE THIRD TRIMESTER. I know it is very hard for the boys to undo/redo their belts when they have to use the bathroom, so Miss Carroll said they do not need to begin wearing belts until March which is the third trimester. Please practice at home with your child how to do/undo their belts so they will be ready for March. Thank You!
